최고의 시인이며
비평가, 극작가로 꼽히는
엘리어트는
1888년
미국의 중서부인 미주리주의
세인트 루이스에서 아버지(헨리 엘리어트)와
신앙심이 독실한 어머니(샤롯 스턴즈)사이에서
7남매 중 막내로 태어났습니다.
엘리어트의 집안은
금욕과 검소한 생활의 실천을 강요하는
엄격한 전형적인 기독교 집안
(Unitarian파)였으며 특히
그의 조부
윌리암(William Greenleaf Eliot)은
세인트 루이스에서 자신의 기독교적 이상실현을 위해서
노력했으며
최초로
유니타리안교회를 설립하고 나아가서 그곳에
워싱턴대학까지 설립했습니다.
이러한 검소하고 금욕적인 분위기는
젊은 시절 종교를 불신하고 벗어나게 하는
원인이 되기도 했지만
결국 엘리어트는
영국 국교로 개종해 독실한 신앙인으로
일생을 마치게 됩니다.
엘리어트는 하버드대학에서
문학 석사 학위를 취득한 뒤 소르본느대학에서 1년간
프랑스 문학과 철학 과정을 수료했고
다시 하버드로 돌아와
형이상학, 논리학, 심리학, 종교학 등을 연구했으며,
옥스퍼드에서 1년 동안 철학을 연구했습니다.
이러한 철학적 논리학적 연구는
엘리어트의 시 작품전반과 비평영역의
사상적 기반이 됩니다.
엘리어트의 시는 크게
두 시기로 구분되어지는데,
초기의 시는
The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock..
Gerontion.. Poems.. The Waste Land..
The Hollow Man.. 등으로 이루어지며,
후기의 시는
시극 Ariel Poems.. Ash Wednesday..
Murder in the Cathedral.. Four Quartet..
등 입니다.
주지주의의 대표작가인
엘리어트는
1927년 영국으로 귀화했고,
1948년 노벨 문학상을 수상했으며,
1965년 생을 마감했습니다.
