Wondering if you are waiting for me. Wondering why you are waiting for me. Am I too late? I am afraid I am too late. And¡¦ still I don't quite appreciate Tony's writing about orchestra ensemble. Is he now able to make his orchestra respond to his piano sound? Whether this marriage is a little nepotism in the hiring or not, don¡¯t you think the conductor should respond to his piano sound? During the concert, I mean. Or is he still Mr. Metronome, who is deaf in one ear? Then what about Tony's opera writing? It would be terrific if he could tell me why his tenor sounds uneven. Vocally, I mean. Is someone destroying the entire vocal ensemble or is it just his own problem? If so, is there no way to fix it? You see, the criticism should come up with the better idea. Don¡¯t you think so? We used to call it "The Art of Criticism."
Well¡¦ I hate this. But this is our open battle. So¡¦ who is my victim this time? Who wrote this stupid article? "...Enlightened provincialism like this needs ideals to look up to, and the Ensemble Wien-Berlin joins principal players of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics. These are splendid players who have much to teach any instrumentalist..."
Perhaps¡¦ this writer never heard the BPO or the VPO. Or has there been some member change lately? I need an exact information. Ex-principal or the present principal or the member from the VPO/BPO? He wrote after all, ¡°the Wien-Berlin players underlined how perfectly he understood the colors of these instruments.¡± Surely, when you hear their ensemble playing, you can also hear the entire orchestra sound totally different whenever the color of those instruments are magically shining. If you still don¡¯t agree with me, please go to the library and pick up all their recordings.
Still, no one knows that there exist some players in American orchestras whose ensemble playing "functions" far better than those guys? Unlike the members of ¡°Ensemble Wien-Berlin¡±, they can function as a pillar in their ensemble. And no one knows¡¦ Poor American! <G>
